Warriors consider Kelly Oubre Jr. reunion as trade market heats up to maximize Stephen Curry’s championship window

Warriors Explore Potential Reunion with Kelly Oubre Jr. as Trade Market Heats Up

The Golden State Warriors find themselves in a holding pattern this offseason, primarily due to ongoing contract discussions with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. While rumors have swirled around potential additions like Al Horford, Gary Payton II, and De’Anthony Melton, the Warriors have yet to make significant moves. This relative silence may prompt the team to turn its attention to the trade market, particularly as they aim to maximize Stephen Curry’s championship window.

Kelly Oubre Jr. Emerges as a Trade Target

One name that has garnered attention in recent discussions is Kelly Oubre Jr. The 29-year-old forward is set to enter unrestricted free agency next offseason, making him a player of interest for teams looking to bolster their rosters. NBA insider Jake Fischer has indicated that the Philadelphia 76ers might explore trade options for Oubre ahead of training camp, potentially creating additional cap space for Quentin Grimes. With an expiring contract worth $8.4 million, Oubre presents an attractive option for teams, as he wouldn’t impose a long-term financial burden.

Oubre’s Past with the Warriors

Andy Bailey from Bleacher Report recently considered potential landing spots for Oubre, highlighting a reunion with the Warriors as a viable option. In theory, a dynamic scorer like Oubre could help draw defenses inward, creating more opportunities for sharpshooters like Curry, Buddy Hield, and Brandin Podziemski.

During his tenure with the Warriors in the 2020-21 season, Oubre averaged 15.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.0 steals across 30.7 minutes per game in 55 regular-season outings. However, his shooting percentages—43.9% from the field and 31.6% from three-point range—left something to be desired. Despite these challenges, the Warriors missed the playoffs that year with a 39-33 record, significantly impacted by Klay Thompson’s absence throughout the season.

Strategic Fit for the Warriors

Given Oubre’s ability to slash to the rim, a reunion could provide the Warriors with a complementary piece to support their elite shooters. As the team looks to enhance its roster and capitalize on Curry’s championship window, Oubre’s versatility and scoring prowess could be valuable assets.

As the trade market continues to evolve, the Warriors must weigh their options carefully. The addition of Oubre could not only rejuvenate the team’s offense but also fortify their pursuit of another title in the highly competitive landscape of the NBA.
