Jaguars trade Tank Bigsby to Eagles for future picks

In a surprising move, the Jacksonville Jaguars have initiated the first trade of the NFL regular season by sending backup running back Tank Bigsby to the Philadelphia Eagles. In exchange for the promising young talent, the Jaguars will receive a pair of future draft picks: a fifth and sixth round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Eagles bolster their backfield

The Eagles’ acquisition of Bigsby is aimed at strengthening their running game, particularly as they look to support star running back Saquon Barkley. With Will Shipley currently nursing a rib injury, Philadelphia has identified Bigsby as a valuable addition. The Eagles are reportedly impressed by his potential as a kick returner, which could provide them with additional versatility in the special teams department.

Impact on Jaguars’ running back room

With Bigsby now part of the defending Super Bowl champions, the Jaguars find themselves with a slimmer backfield. The team’s remaining roster includes three running backs:

Travis Etienne Jr.
Bhayshul Tuten
LeQuint Allen Jr.

Travis Etienne Jr. faces pressure

Travis Etienne Jr. now carries the weight of expectations on his shoulders. Following a disappointing 2024 season, where he appeared in 15 games, Etienne managed just 558 rushing yards on 150 carries, resulting in two touchdowns. The Jaguars had high hopes for Etienne, especially following his reunion with college quarterback Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville’s offense.

While the franchise has exercised Etienne’s fifth-year option, he must prove he can be the centerpiece of the running game. This trade could very well be a pivotal moment in Etienne’s career, offering him a chance to reclaim his position as a top running back in the league.

As the Jaguars navigate the upcoming season, the focus will undoubtedly shift to how their remaining running backs, led by Etienne, will respond to this change and what it means for their offensive strategy moving forward.
