Lakers eye $90M star Andrew Wiggins to boost title hopes as trade talks heat up in Los Angeles

Lakers Pursue Andrew Wiggins to Strengthen Title Aspirations

The Los Angeles Lakers are once again stirring the offseason pot as they set their sights on a potential blockbuster trade for Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins. With aspirations of contending for an NBA championship, the Lakers are exploring various avenues to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Summer Drama in Los Angeles

It wouldn’t be a Los Angeles summer without its fair share of drama, and the Lakers have certainly delivered on that front. After a whirlwind offseason, the team made some strategic moves, adding three key role players while parting ways with just one. Despite these changes, it is abundantly clear that further adjustments are necessary to elevate the Lakers back into title contention.

NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that the Lakers remain keen on acquiring Wiggins, an All-Star forward whose versatility could significantly enhance their frontcourt. Wiggins, now 30, is set to earn $28.2 million this season and possesses a player option worth $30.2 million for the 2026-27 campaign. Stein noted that while Wiggins might not have been on the Lakers’ radar prior to the securing of Luka Dončić’s long-term future with the Mavericks, the situation has shifted, making Wiggins a more appealing target.

Crafting a Deal for Wiggins

Acquiring Wiggins would undoubtedly come at a steep cost. Reports earlier this summer indicated that the Warriors would demand two first-round picks in exchange for their star forward. A potential trade scenario might include those two picks along with either Rui Hachimura or Dalton Knecht, both of whom have shown promise in their respective roles.

Wiggins would complement the Lakers’ existing star power, notably playing alongside LeBron James and the dynamic Dončić. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor—guarding top opponents while thriving without needing the ball—makes him an ideal fit for the Lakers’ system.

The Lakers currently possess five first-round picks, with the most valuable being the 2031 selection. Although the team has shown reluctance to part with these assets, the allure of acquiring a superstar like Wiggins could prompt Lakers president Rob Pelinka to reconsider his stance.

The Clock is Ticking

Despite the ongoing interest in Wiggins, the clock is ticking as the start of the season approaches. Throughout the summer, speculation surrounding a potential deal has persisted, but no concrete developments have emerged. As training camps loom, it remains uncertain whether the Lakers can finalize a trade that would bring Wiggins into the fold.

As Los Angeles continues to navigate the complexities of roster construction, the pursuit of Andrew Wiggins stands as a testament to the Lakers’ ambition to reclaim their status as championship contenders. With the stakes higher than ever, all eyes will be on how this story unfolds in the coming weeks.
