In a thrilling announcement that has ignited excitement among drag racing enthusiasts, the NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series is set to blaze new trails in 2026 with the addition of two brand-new tracks. This monumental change marks the first expansion in over a decade, as South Georgia Motorsports Park and Maryland International Raceway are officially welcomed into the NHRA fold, coinciding perfectly with the league’s 75th anniversary celebrations.
The unveiling of these new venues came during a highly anticipated schedule release, coinciding with the prestigious Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals, where track owners enthusiastically signed agreements in front of the media. This historic moment signifies a bold step forward for the NHRA, as it seeks to broaden its appeal and engage new fans.
Kicking off the action, the NHRA Southern Nationals will make its debut at South Georgia Motorsports Park, located just outside Valdosta, Georgia, from May 1-3. This event will serve as the sixth race of the season, igniting the local drag racing scene with high-octane excitement.
Just weeks later, Maryland International Raceway will step into the spotlight, hosting the NHRA Potomac Nationals from May 29-31. This iconic track, situated near the bustling corridors of Washington, D.C., promises to deliver a thrilling spectacle of 340-mph machines roaring down the strip, offering fans an experience like no other.
The owners of these tracks couldn’t contain their enthusiasm. Raul Torres of SGMP declared, “This is monumental for South Georgia Motorsports Park and the area. This is going to be a historic race and we’re very excited.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the passion his team has for the sport and their commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for fans.
Royce Miller, owner of Maryland International Raceway, echoed this excitement, stating, “We’re bringing the premier show to our market, and I really believe our fans are ready for it.” His confidence in the loyal local fanbase suggests that the inaugural event will be a spectacular showcase of speed and skill.
As NHRA embarks on its landmark 75th season, reaching new markets and expanding its fanbase is a top priority. The addition of SGMP and MIR allows the NHRA to connect with dynamic regions, including Tallahassee, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, bringing the roar of 12,000-horsepower engines to eager spectators for the very first time.
NHRA President Glen Cromwell emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “For us to grow, we have to go to new markets and this is just the beginning.” He expressed excitement about working with the dedicated teams at both venues, highlighting the significance of bringing the league’s superstars to fresh locations.
This development marks the first time since 2013 that the NHRA has introduced new facilities to its national event schedule, a clear indication of the league’s commitment to innovation and growth. Miller, who has been at the helm of Maryland International Raceway since 1989, has cultivated a thriving local fanbase, and now they will have the chance to witness the thrill of an NHRA national event firsthand with the Potomac Nationals—one of 20 events scheduled for 2026.
Cromwell further articulated the excitement surrounding these new venues, stating, “Coming to Maryland International Raceway, it’s going to be a tremendous event. It starts with Royce. He’s a proven track promoter, and we’re thrilled to be there.” As the NHRA prepares for an incredible year of celebration, it aligns perfectly with the United States commemorating its 250th anniversary, promising a spectacular season ahead for fans and competitors alike.
With this bold move into new territories, the NHRA is not just gearing up for a season of speed—it’s setting the stage for a future filled with exhilarating possibilities, ensuring that the roar of drag racing continues to echo far and wide. Fans, get ready; the future of drag racing is brighter than ever!
