Chris Boswell’s 60-yard game-winner transforms Steelers’ Week 1 into a thriller as Mike Tomlin praises his ‘serial killer’ kicker

Date:

Boswell’s Heroics Propel Steelers to Thrilling Week 1 Victory

The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their season with a remarkable victory against the New York Jets, showcasing a thrilling back-and-forth battle that had fans on the edge of their seats. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers managed to outlast their opponents in a game that featured impressive offensive performances from both sides.

Rodgers and Metcalf Shine in Debut

Aaron Rodgers, making his much-anticipated debut for the Jets, delivered a performance that lived up to the hype. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards and threw four touchdown passes, signaling his readiness to lead the Jets this season. Meanwhile, D.K. Metcalf also made a significant impact, recording four receptions for 83 yards. As the Rodgers-Metcalf connection develops, there’s an optimistic belief that it could elevate the Jets’ offense to elite status—something the Steelers’ defense will need to contend with in the weeks to come.

Boswell Emerges as the Game’s Unsung Hero

While the offensive fireworks captured the spotlight, it was kicker Chris Boswell who ultimately emerged as the unsung hero of the day. Although he converted only two field goals, both were monumental. His first kick, a 56-yarder in the second quarter, helped the Steelers take a 10-9 lead. However, it was in the game’s waning moments that Boswell truly solidified his status as a clutch performer. Trailing 32-31 late in the fourth quarter, Boswell nailed a career-long 60-yard field goal that not only sealed the game but also showcased his remarkable leg strength, as he could have likely made it from 65 yards.

Tomlin’s Praise for Boswell

After the game, Tomlin had high praise for his kicker, likening him to a “serial killer” in terms of his calmness under pressure. “I can’t say enough about Boz [Boswell],” Tomlin remarked. “He’s got a low pulse rate. He can’t wait to deliver.” While the term “serial killer” may raise eyebrows, it aptly conveys Boswell’s ability to remain unfazed in high-stakes situations. Tomlin further noted, “Boz always wants to bang from deep. But that’s the type of guy you want banging for you under them circumstances.”

Boswell’s Track Record of Excellence

The 2024 season marks Boswell’s second Pro Bowl appearance, highlighting his status as one of the league’s premier kickers. Last season, he converted 41 of 44 field goal attempts and went a perfect 35-for-35 on extra points, including a long field goal of 57 yards. His consistency placed him at the forefront of the league, as no other kicker made more field goals than Boswell in 2024.

Looking Ahead for the Steelers

Thanks to Boswell’s incredible performance, the Steelers head into Week 1 with a perfect record, a crucial start as they prepare for upcoming matchups against formidable opponents like the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and Minnesota Vikings. With the offense looking to build on the momentum and Boswell delivering in clutch moments, the Steelers are poised for a promising season ahead.
