Steelers hint at Nick Herbig’s return as linebacker shows spark for Week 1 clash against Jets

Steelers Provide Positive Update on Nick Herbig’s Injury Status

The Pittsburgh Steelers are holding out hope for the return of linebacker Nick Herbig ahead of their Week 1 clash against the New York Jets.

Roster Moves Ahead of Jets Game

As the team prepares for their season opener, the Steelers made a notable roster adjustment by promoting cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad to the active roster. While this move was expected, the lack of additional changes may indicate encouraging news regarding their defensive lineup.

Pierre steps in as the Steelers cope with the absence of Cory Trice Jr., who is currently on Injured Reserve due to a hamstring issue and will be sidelined for at least four weeks. With Pierre elevated, Daryl Porter Jr. could also be called up in the future, depending on Pierre’s eligibility.

Injury Updates and Optimism for Herbig

In addition to the cornerback situation, the Steelers are managing a key injury within their linebacker corps that could play to their advantage. Herbig, who sustained a hamstring injury during the second preseason game, has struggled to return to full practice since then. Initially listed as questionable, there are signs that he may be gearing up to play against the Jets.

The organization’s decision not to elevate an additional outside linebacker suggests confidence in Herbig’s readiness. The young edge rusher has expressed his desire to play, stating he’s leaving the final call to the medical staff. Despite being limited during practice, he displayed notable enthusiasm and energy during individual drills, which included vocal encouragement and lively movements.

Strategic Decisions Reflecting Confidence

Pittsburgh had the option to add DeMarvin Leal to the active roster, potentially leaving Herbig sidelined while allowing Leal and rookie Jack Sawyer to back up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. They also considered moving inside linebacker Malik Harrison to an outside role if needed. However, the choice to refrain from adding Leal appears to signal a growing belief in Herbig’s recovery progress.

While nothing is set in stone, the final list of inactive players will be announced approximately an hour and a half before kickoff. As the Steelers head to MetLife Stadium, indications seem to favor a positive outcome for Herbig’s participation in the game.

As the excitement builds for the opening matchup, fans will be eager to see how the team navigates these injury challenges and what contributions Herbig may bring to the field.
