Dodgers-Padres rivalry heats up as Eric Hosmer slams Emmet Sheehan’s ball blunder in viral incident

Date:

Rivalry Intensifies Between Dodgers and Padres

The fierce rivalry between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers has been a highlight of Major League Baseball in recent seasons. As both teams vie for supremacy in the NL West, tensions have only heightened, particularly after a recent viral incident involving Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan.

The Ball Blunder and Its Fallout

In a moment that captured attention across the baseball world, Sheehan was seen on video swapping out a baseball that Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Cam Devanney had used for his first Major League hit. Instead of returning the ball to Devanney, Sheehan tossed it toward the Dodgers’ dugout, sparking a flurry of criticism and commentary.

Following the game, Sheehan expressed regret over the incident, explaining that he had not realized the significance of the ball for Devanney. Had he known, he stated he would have ensured it went back to the Pirates. This explanation, however, did little to quell the outrage from fans and players alike.

Eric Hosmer Weighs In

Among those voicing their discontent was Eric Hosmer, the former Padres veteran. He took to social media to comment on the incident, posting in response to a video breakdown by baseball analyst Ben Verlander. Hosmer referred to Sheehan’s action as “another all-time scumbag move,” leaving many to speculate about who exactly he was targeting with his remark.

Was Hosmer calling out Sheehan directly, or was he casting a wider net at the Dodgers organization? His choice of words seemed to suggest a broader critique of the Dodgers’ reputation, especially given the ongoing competitive animosity between the two teams.

Aftermath and Continuing Rivalry

The incident gained even more context as the Dodgers were swept by the Pirates in that series, leaving Hosmer and Devanney with a bit of satisfaction. Despite the backlash, Sheehan indicated his intention to reach out to Devanney the following day to personally apologize, a move that may help mend fences after the misstep.

For Hosmer, while he has remained active on social media, sharing his thoughts on various baseball matters, he has yet to comment further on his initial statement about Sheehan. As the Dodgers and Padres continue to clash both on and off the field, this rivalry shows no signs of cooling down anytime soon.
