Phillies gamble on Walker Buehler with low-risk move as Alex Cora sees potential for playoff impact

Phillies Take a Chance on Walker Buehler Amidst Playoff Aspirations

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a strategic move to bolster their pitching rotation as they eye a playoff run. With the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Nola’s performance following an extended stint on the injured list, and Taijuan Walker’s inconsistent contributions, the team has opted to take a low-risk gamble on veteran right-hander Walker Buehler. Recently released by the Boston Red Sox, Buehler brings a mix of experience and potential that the Phillies hope will enhance their postseason prospects.

Buehler’s Path Back to the Majors

Buehler’s journey has been a rollercoaster, particularly after a promising playoff showing last year where he did not allow a run in his last three appearances, spanning ten innings. His success led to a substantial contract worth $21.05 million with the Red Sox. However, his tenure in Boston was underwhelming, marked by a 5.45 ERA over 23 appearances, including 22 starts. Consequently, he found himself released, leaving questions about his ability to regain form.

The Phillies plan to have Buehler start his new chapter with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with an anticipated call-up for a mid-September start against the Kansas City Royals. This addition will allow Philadelphia to transition to a six-man rotation as they gear up for the playoffs, providing depth and options when every game counts.

Cora’s Confidence in Buehler’s Abilities

Despite Buehler’s struggles in Boston, his former manager, Alex Cora, has expressed optimism about the right-hander’s future with the Phillies. Cora, speaking on WEEI Afternoons, stated, “I’m glad that he landed with the Phillies. He’s gonna be OK… He’s a pro. He’s a guy that I really respect, very smart kid. I believe he’s gonna help the Phillies win a lot of games over there.” Cora’s endorsement serves as a reassuring sentiment for Phillies fans, hinting that Buehler may rediscover his former self as the season progresses.

While his time with the Red Sox didn’t pan out as hoped, the Phillies are banking on Buehler’s potential to make a significant impact in the upcoming stretch and into the playoffs. As they look to solidify their postseason plans, all eyes will be on Buehler as he seeks to rekindle the form that once made him one of the more promising pitchers in the league.
