Jarran Reed praises Seahawks’ defense as a top NFL contender after impressive midseason revival

Jarran Reed has seen firsthand the evolution of the Seattle Seahawks’ defense this season, particularly under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Macdonald. As the season has progressed, Reed has emerged as a key voice for the defensive unit, expressing confidence in its potential to be one of the best in the league.

Macdonald’s Impact on the Defense

When Mike Macdonald took the helm of the Seahawks, he inherited a team that had seen considerable success under Pete Carroll, who wrapped up his tenure with a 9-8 record in 2023. However, the Seahawks found themselves on the outside looking in as the playoffs approached.

In 2024, Macdonald began the year with a promising 3-0 start. But a five-game losing streak cast a shadow over the season. The team managed to rally, finishing with a respectable 10-7 record, yet once again fell short of postseason contention. What stood out during this time, however, was the defense’s dramatic resurgence after a midseason slump.

A Turnaround to Remember

Reed has been vocal about the transformation he observed during the last stretch of the season. “I really feel like we could be the best defense in this league,” the nine-year veteran stated, reflecting the newfound confidence within the squad.

An analysis of the season reveals significant fluctuations in the defense’s performance. In their initial three games, the Seahawks allowed just 43 points, surrendering only three offensive touchdowns. However, the following six games were a stark contrast, with the unit conceding 20 offensive touchdowns and an alarming average of 29.7 points per game.

The tide began to turn in the final eight games of the season. During the 6-2 finish, the Seahawks’ defense tightened its grip, allowing only 14 offensive touchdowns and significantly reducing the points allowed to an average of 18.4 per game. This shift not only reinvigorated the team but also reignited hope for the future.

Reed’s Confidence in the Unit

Reed’s belief in his team’s capabilities is shared among his teammates, who have rallied behind Macdonald’s strategies. The defensive tackle has been instrumental in this growth, contributing not only on the field but also as a leader in the locker room.

As the Seahawks look ahead, Reed’s optimism is a crucial element in fostering a strong defensive identity as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the upcoming season. The team’s resilience after a rocky start speaks to their potential, and with Macdonald at the helm, they are eager to prove their mettle.

In the ever-competitive landscape of the NFL, the Seahawks’ defense has shown glimpses of greatness, and with the right adjustments and continued growth, they may just be on the verge of becoming a formidable force.
