Cowboys Hit the Jackpot with Javonte Williams in Season Debut

The Denver Broncos made a significant decision to part ways with running back Javonte Williams, whose early promise in the NFL was overshadowed by injuries that affected his performance. After a series of setbacks, the Broncos opted not to re-sign Williams, allowing him to find a new home with the Dallas Cowboys. This move may very well benefit Dallas while leaving Denver to reconsider its choices.

Injury Struggles Prompt Broncos’ Decision

Williams’ journey took a difficult turn after he suffered a devastating knee injury in 2022, which included tears to both his ACL and LCL. This injury not only sidelined him but also seemed to diminish his explosive playmaking ability. During his rookie season, Williams rushed for an impressive 903 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. However, his performance post-injury sharply declined, with averages of just 3.6 yards per carry in 2023 and 3.7 yards in 2024.

Feeling the pressure to improve, the Broncos sought fresh talent for their backfield, bringing in J.K. Dobbins through free agency and selecting RJ Harvey from UCF in the second round of the draft. This shift signaled that the Broncos viewed Williams as expendable in their pursuit of rejuvenating their running game.

A Calculated Bet for Dallas

For the Cowboys, signing Javonte Williams represented a calculated risk. With a two-year gap since his injury, Dallas was banking on the possibility that Williams could rediscover the form that made him a standout in his rookie season. The Cowboys were in need of a running back after allowing Rico Dowdle to depart for the Carolina Panthers in free agency.

Williams joined the Cowboys on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $3.5 million, with a base salary of $3 million. From the outset, it appeared to be a promising investment.

A Stellar Season Debut

In his first game wearing the Cowboys’ colors, Williams made an immediate impact, scoring both of the team’s touchdowns. His performance not only highlighted his potential but also underscored the Cowboys’ faith in their new acquisition. As the season progresses, both teams will be watching closely to see if this gamble pays off for Dallas while Denver adjusts to life without him.

In the world of the NFL, where every decision can have lasting repercussions, the early returns on Williams’ move to Dallas suggest that the Cowboys may have struck gold at the running back position.
