Astros hold breath as $95M closer Josh Hader shows signs of recovery with postseason hopes hinging on his return

The Houston Astros are firmly planted at the top of the American League West, boasting a 77-63 record as they enter a crucial stretch of the season. With a four-game cushion over the Seattle Mariners, the Astros are poised to claim the division title despite a series of challenges on the injury front.

Injury Concerns Loom Over Houston

In recent months, injuries have dominated the narrative surrounding the Astros, bringing a wave of bad news. However, optimism is now surfacing with encouraging updates regarding their $95 million closer, Josh Hader. Hader has been sidelined since August 8 due to a shoulder capsule strain in his throwing arm, casting uncertainty over his availability for the remainder of the regular season and into the postseason.

Positive Signs for Hader’s Recovery

Before the Astros faced off against the New York Yankees, manager Joe Espada shared some hopeful insights regarding Hader’s condition. “Josh Hader had follow-up imaging on his shoulder this week,” Espada noted. “The results showed that the capsule is healing, but he is still not to the point of resuming throwing.” This update, posted on social media by Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, suggests that while Hader is making progress, there is still a road ahead before he can return to the mound.

October Aspirations Hang in the Balance

Despite not being able to throw just yet, there remains a glimmer of hope for Hader’s return in October. His presence would be a significant boost for the Astros as they gear up for a potential World Series run. Before his injury, Hader was in the midst of yet another stellar season, recording a 6-2 record with a 2.05 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, and amassing 76 strikeouts over 52.2 innings across 48 appearances.

As the Astros navigate the final stretch of the season, the anticipation surrounding Hader’s recovery will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping their postseason strategy.
