Tyrese Maxey stirs Philly pride with Cowboys allegiance but 76ers fans still hopeful for playoff return

Tyrese Maxey sparks mixed emotions with Cowboys fandom while 76ers fans cling to playoff hopes

Tyrese Maxey has quickly become a key player for the Philadelphia 76ers since being drafted No. 21 overall in 2020. Over the course of five seasons, he has established himself as a reliable scoring option, averaging 19.5 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. Last season marked a career high for Maxey, who upped his average to an impressive 26.3 points, along with 6.1 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. His contributions have not gone unnoticed; he was awarded the Most Improved Player Award and made his first All-Star appearance, solidifying his status as a beloved figure in Philadelphia.

A playful rivalry emerges

However, that affection took an unexpected turn ahead of the highly anticipated Thursday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. Maxey stirred the pot on social media, posting, “PHILLY FAM… Y’all know I love you guys DEARLY and I’m soooo happy the city got a ring! BUT TODAY… WE BEEFING GO COWBOYS.” Accompanied by crying-laughing emojis, his message highlighted a lighthearted rivalry with the team he grew up supporting in Dallas, Texas.

Maxey’s roots run deep in the Lone Star State, where he was born and raised, playing his high school basketball in Garland. This connection to the Cowboys makes his allegiance understandable, yet it doesn’t erase the sting felt by many Philadelphia fans who expect loyalty to their teams from their athletes. The playful jab at his hometown team may have left some fans wondering just how invested he is in the city that has embraced him.

Hopeful times ahead for the 76ers

Despite the mixed reactions to Maxey’s comments, 76ers fans have reason to remain optimistic about the upcoming season. With Maxey, Paul George, Joel Embiid, and recent draft pick Jared McCain all back to full health, the team looks poised to make a significant impact. Each player has faced their share of injuries in the past, but when on the court, they have shown the ability to perform at a high level.

Much like their counterparts in the NFL, 76ers fans are hopeful for a fruitful season. After missing the playoffs last year, there’s a shared desire among the fanbase to see their team return to postseason play. With a healthy core ready to compete, the road ahead looks promising for the franchise—and for Maxey, as he navigates the expectations of both his new home and beloved roots.
